In early June of 2019, a 32-year old man managed to escape from Alcatraz, one of the most high-security prisons in the United States. He did so by jumping off the roof and swimming to freedom. This was the first successful escape from Alcatraz in over 36 years.

The man, who has not been identified, allegedly paid $5,000 for the opportunity to make his escape. The organizers of the scheme are still at large.

The escapee had reportedly been plotting his getaway for some time, and had even gone so far as to learn how to swim in order to make it across the prison's notoriously treacherous waters. On the night of his escape, he climbed up onto the roof of the prison and jumped into San Francisco Bay.

He was only able to make it a few hundred yards before being captured by police officers. He is currently being held in San Francisco County Jail on charges of attempted escape and conspiracy.

This was not the first attempt to escape from Alcatraz; there have been several unsuccessful attempts over the years. But this is the first time that anyone has successfully managed to break out of this high-security prison.

Alcatraz was originally built as a military fortress in 1848, and it wasn't until 1933 that it was converted into a maximum security prison. It gained notoriety as "The Rock" due to its inaccessibility and high security levels. Escapees were practically guaranteed a life sentence on Alcatraz Island, so very few ever tried to break out.

The most famous Alcatraz inmate was probably Robert Stroud, who was nicknamed "the Birdman of Alcatraz". He was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942 after killing a guard at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. Stroud became known for his work with birds while incarcerated at Alcatraz, and he wrote several books on avian biology while incarcerated there.
